Alty Things; More Race Changes

Since Naora is gearing up reasonably well (9/12 on 25 man, 11th for 25 progression on server, two pieces of tier), I can afford to give my alts some love. The last time I blogged about them I had 1 85, an 84, an 82, 4 80s, a 75 and a level 16. Some weeks later I’m now in possession of 6 85s, 2 82’s , a 31, a 10 and a brand new level 1 hunter.

I hit 85 on my mage and quested to about halfway through TH for the guild achievement (ungrateful gits didn’t say much). I’m a bit stuck on her tailoring at 500,  despite the cloth gathering buff. My other alts hardly pick up any in comparison. Managed to max herbalism by the time I finished Deepholm. She’s gathering dust until I can decide which alt I really want to play at max. Also for some reason, she didn’t pick up a cloak to replace the heirloom one. Cloak pain like ICC all over again.

I had done a bit more on my pally and got out of Hyjal, pushed past Deepholm and into Uldum. Levelling as prot feels clunky and I imagine it would be worse were I not levelling with Celin on his BM hunter. Mining maxed (no surprises there) but blacksmithing ignored as I’ve only just hit 450 with it. I then switched to ret and hit 85 in Uldum.

I think I needed more enchanting  mats and I had begun doing the JC daily everyday so I took my priest to Vashj’ir. She blasted through the whole zone, cleared Deepholm in about 2 sessions of play and hit 85 in TH, helping dwarves (skipped Uldum, really don’t want 2 chars in the same zone – keep getting confused on pally because I did the quests on priest the day before and suchlike) I am actually very tempted to go holy at 85 because I like healing, but I haven’t healed on a priest for years. JC and enchanting maxed just these last few days which took a lot of gold and time.

I swapped my gnome for a worgen warlock because I wanted a max level worgen. It was quite strange as I didn’t change her name but I was always bit iffy about having a gnome character to begin with. She made fast progress and ended up 85 in TH as affliction (having swapped from demo at about 83)

I dusted off my DK and sent him to Hyjal. Specced frost as it was meant to be the easiest and died about 8 times in the starting part before going back to unholy. He was always, always unholy, even when it was a viable tanking spec in Wrath. I loved the idea of being an anti-paladin, spreading disease with an undead pet at my side. I think it was to add some variety to my overall alliance experience, as they are by no means the good guys, but they are the less dark and primal overall. I also decided that I could bear the male night elf model no more, so he is now a she, with electric pink hair. I was always disappointed that my male dk couldn’t have pink hair.

I specced my shaman elemental for the first time ever and sent her to Vashj’ir with Celin’s mage. Having a (fire) blast with her so far.

I also finally got out of the dreaded Northrend on my rogue. The last 5 or so levels were so completely boring and then I struggled at the start of Hyjal because I had only heirlooms and crappy blues.

The stacking guild perks plus heirlooms and rested means my baby worgen gets a level a week  just from cooking and fishing every day. I’ve spent so much time looking for spell before realising that she doesn’t get it for many levels (MOW, faeire fire etc) but she really is a machine when it comes to feral dps. I have duel specced her resto as I can’t seem to get away from healing.

For some reason I decided I don’t have enough herbalists and rolled a new lock, a dwarf this time, Camillenoire (another Clive Barker/Tortured Soul reference) I got her in the guild and although it’s weird without heirlooms, it’s not going too badly. Only died once when I took on too many troggs. I also felt like I needed an ally hunter, so Celin has rolled a draenei warrior and I have a draenei hunter, although they haven’t even been out of the starting zone.

I think I’m compelled to make more alts because I have levelled the others so fast. I expected that realistically I would perhaps have another alt at 85 by now, not 5 of them. I still can’t decide which one to play when I’m not playing Naora. I took both my priest and worgen through some normals (HOO and LCOT) but neither of them felt amazingly fun. I also had an argument with a priest healer over a staff in HOO, which left me feeling iffy about pugs again.

I’m enjoying healing and the challenges of Cata raiding (having worse gear than the other healers to boot). We’ve had a switch about with one of the paladins going shaman (we had 4 holy paladins) but I still remain the only resto druid. Last night was our first 25 man Atramedes kill, which sees us move up by one whole place on the server rank. We are also on a par with the 10 man (killed Atra on 10 man the night before!) and have been working on Cho’gall.

The only place I’m experiencing anything like burnout is in fact through playing the AH. Since the price for ore on my realm has plummeted, the competition is stiff in the gem and enchant market. The endless posting, reposting and undercutting is a never ending job some days so I’ve had to withdraw temporarily until some markets pick up again. I’m still making a good profit on flipping cheap blues and epics and the companion pet market is strong in anticipation of the new achievements in 4.2.

Finally, on a last amusing note, WE BROKE MAGMAW.

On the jumpy head phase, he went backwards instead of towards the raid, meaning no one could get near him. In the screenshot everyone is just stood around, like err, what now? Would have been a new record kill but for that 😛

Others

Archeology Rewards

Apart from the fun items there’s a few nice bits. However you will need to be close to max before getting a chance for these to pop up for creation. You can reforge archeology items (like I have done with the ring)

[E] Staff Of Ammunae – Level 85 BOA staff with spirit. Requires 150 Tol’Vir archeology fragments (approx 17 dig sites)

[E] Staff Of Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan – Level 85 BOA staff without spirit. Requires 150 Dwavern archeology fragments

[E] Tyrande’s Favourite Doll – Level 85 BOA trinket with a massive chunk of int, a mana store/release and added small aoe. Requires 150 Night Elf fragments.

[E] Ring Of The Boy Emperor – Level 85 BOA ring, decent stats for any healer/caster. One of the more “common” rares. Requires 150 Tol’vir fragments.

BOEs

[R] Tarvus’s Poison-Scarred Boots

[R] Blazewing’s Furious Kilt Drops specifically from Blazewing, an 81 rare

[R] Brittany’s Ceremonial Spaulders

*New* Epic BOEs – Raids

If you are lucky enough to have a good guild then you may get some of these early on in your trash killing in BOT or BWD. Alternately you might get them on trash farming runs, buy them off other players in the raid or from the auction house. The prices I’m listing are what they are going for on my realm (ally side)

[E] Hide of Chromaggus – One of two shoulders (excluding tier 11) that you can obtain from BWD. The other being BOP Passive Resistor Shoulders from Omnitron Council (which is better for us due to the amount of haste) Going for about 35-40k gold on the AH.

[E] Chelley’s Staff of Dark Mending – 2 handed staff from BOT trash, expect to fight your other casters and healers for this bad boy. Going for anywhere up to 55k on the AH.

*New* Epic BOEs – World Drops

[E] Dorian’s Lost Necklace -Haste/mastery neck piece. The one from Wildhammer/Dragonwmaw rep is similar except it has crit instead or haste. Goes for about 20k on the AH.

[E] Heartbound Tome – Offhand with spirit and mastery. Goes for around 30k on the AH.

[E] Signet of High Arcanist Savor – Ring with hit and crit, so not the best stats for healing. Sold one myself few months ago for 20k and it has stayed around that price.

[E] Ritssyn’s Ruminous Drape – Cloak with haste, mastery and a yellow slot. Sells for around 20k on the AH

PvP Reputation

Baradin’s Wardens (Alliance)/ Hellscream’s Reach (Horde) – Tol Barad

[E] Mandala Of Stirring Patterns (A) / (H) – Trinket with spirit and mastery intellect (!) proc. Requires Exalted.

[R] Shimmering Morningstar (A)/ (H) – 1h mace. Requires Revered.

[R] Insidious Staff (A)/ (H) – 2h staff. Requires Revered.

Nothing worth getting from guild rewards, apart from the cauldrons and feasts for groups/raids.

Updates to Part 1:

[Tattooed Eyeball] is now a rare item,  stats apparently nerfed as well

Power Torrent seems to be the enchant that everyone is recommending over Heartsong. However it costs a lot.

A lot of the lower dungeon stuff has been upgraded but not sure if  wowhead reflects this yet.

Gearing For 85; Shinies For Resto Druids, Part 1 *Revised Feb 2011*

*Revised Feb 2011 from my own experiences and to change some stuff that’s been updated since Cata came out*

  • Removed cloth as it’s not really worth breaking the bonus
  • Added Valor points gear (since it’s possible you might have some from dungeons etc)
  • In the Gurgthock’s vs Very Manly Staff debate, it depends how long you are going to keep that item for. I think MH plus OH is superior if you are going to enchant them and have a decent OH but if you are hitting high level dungeons and heroics straight away, you’ll replace all of them pretty quickly.

I’ve made this list as much for myself as for the others out there. When WOTLK hit, my mage was in a mess of Tier and craftables so the majority was replaced easily by quest rewards along the way. This time, Naora is in full T10 plus some heroic ICC 10 stuff and badge gear. I feel quite overwhelmed with starting again in gearing so I’ve made this post to help guide choices in questing, justice points and rep grinds to ensure  getting the best possible start to heroics, then raiding at 85.

Crafting

Alchemy

[E] Lifebound Alchemist Stone – Trinket. Finally we get epic alchemy stones again!

[E] Vibrant Alchemist Stone – Trinket. An excellent starter trinket replacing the previous stam/mastery generic stone

Tailoring

Nothing worth taking from tailoring.

Engineering

[E] Camouflage Bio-Optic Killshades – 1 meta slot plus the engineering gem slots. Engineers only however.

Lich King 10 Man Kill Video

My guild’s 10 man kill (not first) which I was in on 31st October 2010. Best viewed in 480p at expanded (not full screen, which means going to the video location here)

Track listing (all by Celldweller, mixed by Celin for me)
Birthright beta 1.0
Wings of Icarus
Goodbye

Yes, someone did die and released before the end >>

I was frapsing in half screen which is a mistake so from now on going full screen and hoping for better quality!

My Experience Of Druid Healing Post 4.0, Part 2

This week saw my guild’s first shots at LK on 25 man after our successful take down of Sindragosa. Since then I’d done some tweaking to my spec and gear, switching to this set of talents (as recommended by TBJ again) and doing some reforging and gemming (stacking haste, reducing crit) as my mana regen was still incredibly high. It’s still 1022 out of combat and 598 in so I’m never running out of mana. Gear still pretty much the same apart from the upgraded headpiece (Armory doesn’t show reforging yet)

I’ve switched to Vudho, which I found gave me a lot more functionality that just Clique alone. Despite hearing that it was crazy hard to set up, I managed to get it done quite easily. I’ve had to write down what all my mouse clicks means though.

New UI setup with Vudho

I would love to say that we killed him but there’s no way we were going to get him down on those first attempts. I would say maybe a dozen of the raid team had experience of a 10 man kill but that left the rest of us unprepared for the complexity of the fight. You can read all the guides you want and watch loads of videos but it’s not the same when you’re there, freaking out about getting the Necrotic Plague (I didn’t get it /relief)

I felt slightly noobish to get excited and nervous when Arthas has been killed more than 489,000 times (according to Blizzard themselves) and I even had the shakes a bit. Our best attempt was 60% which is halfway and into phase 2, so that’s not terrible.

Healing wise I just tried to keep to a rotation; Lifebloom stacks on the LK tank and rejuvs/regrowths on the 2 off tanks. Used wild growth to help with the aoe damage on the melee and Effloresence on the ranged/healers. Popped Tree on transition to phase 2, along with the improved Lifeblood haste boost. Most of the wipes were caused by the Shockwave done by the larger adds, which took out up to 10 people. The 30 min battle res is still making things awkward, particularly with over zealous dps pulling LK threat!

I know a problem I definitely have is nerves. With playing my mage I felt no fear, the healers would take care of me (to a degree) and all I had to do was move and shoot magic at the boss until loot happened. On my druid, I’m feeling the pressure. I keep healing myself for some reason, partly so I can pop the Efflorescence on the ranged. I’m not even sure if that’s a good idea.

In part, it might be because the other healers are a) experienced and awesome and b) all officers in the guild. I’ve had no complaints from the healing team so far so I’m hoping I’m doing ok. I should probably do more practice in heroics and normal 5 mans but I’m still too worried I won’t be able to keep up.

Next raid day is Wednesday; so it’s either a reset or more tries on LK, depending on numbers.

Sindragosa Kill Video

No time this morning to write more about my experiences as a druid healer (it’s my dad’s birthday so we are out for the day), but we did get Sindragosa down finally. One of my guildies frapsed it so here it is. I can be seen running about madly in some parts! Video not available in Germany because of the music 🙂

My Experience Of Druid Healing Post 4.0.1

With Naora now my main, and the guild’s sort-of-agreement about it (I’ll bring mage for progress fights until Cata) I can finally raid the way I wanted for a long time; as a healer. The new patch is both a good and bad time to take up a new role. It’s good because there aren’t many precedents set, with everyone having new talents and changed spells to deal with. It’s a bad time because I’m slightly undergeared and not used to the new way of healing.

The guild doesn’t have many resto druids at all and I can’t remember a time when we had a dedicated 100% full time resto. The only other current resto druid hasn’t been on since the patch so I’ve done my own research into how to play, as well as linking to the great Tree Bark Jacket guide for my guildies to use for their offspecs and alts.

On beta, I didn’t even go near trying out the resto spec. Of course I played about with talents and spells but everything that was coming from the other testers suggested things weren’t looking good. High mana consumption, a mastery that was almost completely useless (hots healing more on targets with low hp) and the removal of tree as a permanent form were some of the issues raised. Changes were made, spells tweaked and the mastery totally revamped and it was after some PTR testing that the general mood was that things weren’t as bad as they had seemed and Cataclysm would not be the death of resto.

Tree form becoming a cooldown is obviously an issue for a lot of druids out there, more for the aesthetic value than what the tree form was providing. Whilst I will miss the dancing tree, it would not stop me playing a resto druid.

On Wednesday (patch day for us here in EU) our gm was desperate to try out the new changes, so a raid to VOA was made. Slightly under at 20 people went along, with myself as the only resto druid. Other healers included a holy priest, disco priest and 2 paladins. The tanks were a druid, death knight and warrior.

On Thursday, our gm had organised a raid for ICC to really test our new specs. Only had 16 people available but decided to try it anyway. Same healer and tank composition as the previous night. Managed 3/12 before Saurfang got the better of us (we were down to 15 people at that point)

I was using the rotation of Rejuvenation + Lifebloom x3 on main tank, with Rejuvs and Efflorescence procs from Swiftmend to heal the rest of the raid (as recommended by TBJ) Normal buffs including fish feasts and flask of the north (40 Int)

Observations:

  • I didn’t run out of mana once, which is good because Innvervate isn’t so great anymore.
  • I was trying not to pre hot the raid but old habits die hard! I will go oom a lot in Cataclysm if I don’t train myself to stop.
  • Where ever you place your Efflorescence pool, no one will be there 2 seconds later.
  • Running about in caster form isn’t quite as amusing as being a flailing tree.
  • Nourish feels incredibly slow now, despite it being our good and semi expensive heal.
  • I like the change to Regrowth (flash heal with a hot) although I keep forgetting to use it.
  • I don’t think I even used Wild Growth, which is probably bad.
  • I did remember to use my tree of life cooldown, popping it at Heroism (Bloodlust) moments and spamming Lifebloom stacks and instant Regrowths.
  • The 30 minute Rebirth worries me, as we have some particularly suicidal raiders.
  • Healing is definitely more reactionary than before. Rather than lots of little bits of damage, it’s a ton of damage on a few people.
  • I panicked a lot but I don’t think anyone noticed.

Overall, I am enjoying the new playstyle. I really feel that rather than coping with the changes and being unhappy about it, I can make it my own and get better.
