20 days of…; Day 4 – Best WoW Memory

I think it’s impossible for me to pick one as I’ve had so many great times in game but these are the ones that stuck out most in my mind;

Running around SW on my mage and pointing out to my dad that the other chars running around “were all real people playing the game” I was so overexcited I think, having mostly played single player games, to see the world filled with other people. It seemed so alive.

Rolling belfs for the first time with 2 people from my old guild and making stupid jokes about wearing all grey items (she was paladin, who I got to level 17 before I deleted)

When Naora was a tiny level 11, a 70 friend from my old guild (who since quit) had taken me through some quests and we were hanging out late at night in Darnassus. He had done some arenas and went afk, but left autorun on. I could see his health dropping and then he was dead. He had run under a bridge and drowned in his full pvp gear.

Horrible old UI, a bad memory!

When the Isle Of Quel’Danas vendors first appeared and it was this new and exciting area. Dozens of people stacking on the vendor so you couldn’t see them. Loved it there.

Quel'Danas vendors - first day

Sitting on TS the evening of the Wrath launch playing my new dk and everyone talking (and moaning about the server queues)

Sitting on TS the night Cata went live. Logged outside SW to find I couldn’t get back in (although that’s probably not a good memory, lol)

Anytime I kill a new boss or make progress with my guild. Been there for years now and I couldn’t imagine raiding with any other group of people.

My Archeology Grind – Electric Nerubian Boogaloo

It’s been a few weeks since my last archeology post because of the burnout after finally reaching 20 rares (which was on the 30th Jan, although it feels so much longer)

The clockwork gnome popped pretty soon after I swapped to EK to start my farming. A few more greys and I had the Innkeeper’s Daughter queued so I could so say I had 18/20 rares done. Ah!, I thought, won’t take me long to finish the nerubian, I mean there’s only 2 of them right? I should have learned my lesson from the time spent farming before. Nerubian are the Tolv’ir of Nothrend, with the majority of sites being vrykul, with a few nelf ones and troll. The commons are also creepy as anything; still beating hearts in a box? jewellery filled with live insects? bottles of blood?

The 2 rares are “fun” objects – I say “fun” because they are again on the slightly odd side of things. The Blessing Of The Old God turns you into a Qiraji battle tank, similar to the Bones Of Transformation from nelf solves.

Blessing of the old gold transformation rare

The Puzzle Box of Yogg Saron whispers you, similar to Cthun’s whispers, whenever you attempt to open the box. I like the puzzle box because Hellraiser was one of my favourite film series when I was younger, and it’s a slight homage to the Lament Configuration, the box that when solved summoned the Cenobites and opened the door to hell. It’s more obvious when you see the pop up for the rare, the intricate design work is similar of the Lament Configuration. The triangular spikes also remind me of the shape of  Leviathan, the leader of the Cenobites (it resembles a large diamond, with very sharp points) Obviously the main homage is to Lovecraft because of the old gods, but it’s a nice touch.

The Lament Configuration

The actual farming of the rares was quite boring, as I had completed the vrykul axe as an easy solve before. I was reluctant to set my hearthstone to Dalaran (I knew I’d forget to swap it back) so I was relying on my engineering wormhole every 4 hours to get me from one side to the other faster than a flight path. I believe I went 3 hours without a nerubian site one day. I know Tol’vir is supposed to be rarer but I don’t think I’ve had such bad luck with them. Overall, I farmed Northrend (with detours back to EK when I couldn’t take it anymore) for over a week. I had gone through all the commons but one (sceptre) before the old god amulet showed up and then perhaps 4-5 commons before the old god box. It doesn’t sound bad but then you consider each common was 45 frags and I would get maybe 1-2 sites per 4 hour session, it was a bit disheartening. I came away with 1100 vrykul fragments after I was finished, even after finishing up the last few commons I hadn’t done.

I felt pretty tired after the week of digging in Northrend but I was on my last rare so I burned through it and hit 20 rares at about 12.10 am on the 30th. I think there’s less than 10 people on my realm with the title; only seen 3 ally side including myself and the realm first guy.

Getting the Professor title!

After that I felt I simply didn’t want to touch archeology for a while. I had a bag and bank stuffed full of greys which I knew I could vendor in the next patch and whilst I wanted the other rares, I knew I had to give myself a break (raiding, raid prep, alts, alt levelling, RL – all too much)

Note: Not advisable to use the name changing rares in a raid situation that uses EPGP loot addon. You will realise that , although it’s fun to run back as a battle tank after a wipe, you aren’t getting any EP points and have to shamefully admit this to your raid leader and gm, who will take the piss out of you.

Patch Changes

The patch a few days ago bought some welcome changes to archeology.

  • The sell value of all common artifacts has been doubled, while a small subset of common artifacts have had their sell value increased far beyond that.

Definitely a change for the better and kind of soothes the pain of being capped at 200 frags from now on. I had thousands of fragments left so figured I would solve them and get the gold instead of sitting on them, worrying when Blizz would remove the excess or release new rares. I ended up with 3514g worth of items, from the following:

572g in greys stored since the increase in values discovered (mostly nerubian, vrykul and some troll)

1036g from nelf solves (including 3 scroll cases at 200g each and 2 chests of glass animals at 100g each)

1401g from fossil solves (including 6 Kraken tentacles at 200g each and 3 proto-drake skeletons at 20g each)

505g from vrykul solves (including 6 intricate treasure chest keys at 50g each)

  • Archaeology fragments now have a hard cap of 200 per race. Players will not be able to collect additional fragments until they complete artifacts to take them down below 200 fragments. Players with more than 200 fragments will not lose additional fragments in 4.0.6, but in a future patch we may remove any fragments above 200.

I don’t really mind this as I already had the rare BOA (Tyrande’s favourite doll) and therefore never even bothered hoarding frags to 525. With the sell cost up of the commons, it’s easier to just make them, vend, and move on.

  • Archaeology finds now grant a guaranteed skill point up to 50 skill, and then no longer grant skill gains, as opposed to granting up to 100 skill very slowly.

A good change for anyone planning on levelling from scratch. It was annoying to have the frags intermittently give skill from about 85 -ish (so much so I cracked around 91 and started solving, constantly being at an odd number for the entirety of my levelling)

  • Undocumented Change – Seven new Tol’Vir Dig Sites added to Uldum, two new Nerubian sites added to Eastern Plaguelands and two new Nerubian sites added to Northrend.

Hooray for more Tol’vir! I did get one yesterday when I was doing an hour or so of digging, Schnott’s Landing. I was unimpressed with the size of the site and because it’s so open (and Archy was broken) it took me a while to find all the frags. On the plus side, it’s empty of mobs after completing the quest chain there.

More nerubian sites. Well, guess it had to happen after I spent hours farming but it makes it easier for others and that’s good. I might be a bit resentful when I got back to EK to farm dwarf and troll.

  • Undocumented Change – You can now solve projects while mounted.

Useful but not game breakingly awesome. Saves time I suppose and someone must have complained about it to get it changed.

  • Undocumented Change – It is now possible to walk through unearthed archaeology finds.

Was kind of amusing to have one spawn on you and become stuck within it, but good to have it changed.

So what’s next?

I’m still wanting the Tol’vir bug mount (seen one on my server so far) and the other rares. They are really the next thing to grind due to the number of rares left to find (4), compared to the 1 of each dwarf and troll. Can I get all of the rares? I’d like to think so but we will see what the next content patches bring before I start dedicating such massive chunks my time again

New Armory Has Some Dodgy Poses

After checking this thread on MMO, I was inspired to check my chars out and see how they looked (you can do this either by going to eu.battle.net/wow/en or us.battle.net/wow/en and searching for your char or logging in to the site and viewing profile.

The new armory does look shiny and nice but it really has put some of my chars in unflattering light (which you can’t change currently)

Going from most dodgy to actually an ok appropriate representation:

I will shoot fire with my one good but rigid arm

Legs spread apart like you’ve been on the world’s most uncomfortable bike ride? check. One arm appearing to be growing from ass? check. Waist twisted at such an angle it would be hard pushed to stay upright? check. Slightly suspect positioning of arm in some form of salute? check. Arm appearing to be rotated at weird angle? check.

Somehow this doesn’t say mage, it says uncomfortable yoga position.

2 handed sword... in one hand

Maybe it’s the casual air with which my nelf dk holds his enormous 2 handed sword in one hand. Maybe it’s the fact that he appears to be playing air guitar with no regard for others safety.

Melee resto dps?

I will heal you, but so help me god, if you don’t move from the fire I will beat you to death with my purple diamond carving knife.

So very angry

I once caught a gnome that was this big. It made me very angry for some reason, so I adopted a battle stance.

Insert big tankards joke here

Quick, I’m about to have bar fight, someone shine a spotlight directly on my face so you can see that I’ve been eating a bag of lemons!

Once you see it, it cannot be unseen

Looks pretty ok until you see the tabard position.  That’s right, I can dps and do pelvic thrusts AT THE SAME TIME.

Lock and paladin don’t show for me yet and neither do my horde chars.

I actually do like the new website and the design of the armory is nice. Let’s hope we can fix the poses soon.

Alty Things; I Used To Love Hallows End, Once

Halloween is possibly my favourite holiday of the whole year. Nothing like dressing up and having a good time, and I’ve always felt that this time of the year is a bit magical, a bit spooky. The nights are darker and the twilight lasts longer. It’s getting cold but not cold enough to make me unhappy.

I also enjoyed the WoW version of Hallow’s end. Last year since I was in hospital I missed almost 3/4 of the event which meant I didn’t do the Headless Horseman at all and only did the treat bags and some low level quests on alts. This year I’ve got 7 80s, all in need of Justice Points and I’m feeling a the onset of event boss syndrome. That is, I end up doing nothing in WoW for 2 weeks apart from running HH 7 times a day and raids. Add to that my friend, Blizzard’s RNG and you get a stressful two weeks, cursing the unfairness of the loot table. I’m not even going to mention the endless mouseover disconnect bug, although I was fairly lucky in that I was one of the least affected.

Therefore, this is how the alts and Naora are fairing so far in Hallows End.

So far only Naora and Aya have the achievement, and I really don’t have time to get it on the rest, so 2/7.

Harder than you would think, but then we are relying on RNG. Think all of them have it so 7/7 plus Iseult.

Managed through a combination of bags, HH kills and the daily. I have an extra 7 Squashlings and no idea how many helms I have because they are unique.

2/7 chars have the mount, but sadly not Naora. To add insult to injury, my shaman has the reins not once, not twice but three times. It’s pretty insane. I actually dread opening her loot filled pumpkin incase there’s a fourth set.

Seeing this makes me sad 😦

The vomiting one is easy so they’ve all done that. I remember doing some candy buckets when I was multiboxing the lock/shaman but I just don’t have time to go round them all.

Maybe it’s having so many characters that I want to get achievements on. I even find myself still logging on Aya/Naora when they have the meta just for treat bags. I don’t even know why. I’m just thankful the next few holidays in WoW have no event bosses (they do however contain PvP and going to Horde cities, which I’m not looking forward to)

I think the next week will be more HH until the event is over, levelling Iseut (38 now) and raiding, hoping to get LK down!

My Experience Of Druid Healing Post 4.0, Part 2

This week saw my guild’s first shots at LK on 25 man after our successful take down of Sindragosa. Since then I’d done some tweaking to my spec and gear, switching to this set of talents (as recommended by TBJ again) and doing some reforging and gemming (stacking haste, reducing crit) as my mana regen was still incredibly high. It’s still 1022 out of combat and 598 in so I’m never running out of mana. Gear still pretty much the same apart from the upgraded headpiece (Armory doesn’t show reforging yet)

I’ve switched to Vudho, which I found gave me a lot more functionality that just Clique alone. Despite hearing that it was crazy hard to set up, I managed to get it done quite easily. I’ve had to write down what all my mouse clicks means though.

New UI setup with Vudho

I would love to say that we killed him but there’s no way we were going to get him down on those first attempts. I would say maybe a dozen of the raid team had experience of a 10 man kill but that left the rest of us unprepared for the complexity of the fight. You can read all the guides you want and watch loads of videos but it’s not the same when you’re there, freaking out about getting the Necrotic Plague (I didn’t get it /relief)

I felt slightly noobish to get excited and nervous when Arthas has been killed more than 489,000 times (according to Blizzard themselves) and I even had the shakes a bit. Our best attempt was 60% which is halfway and into phase 2, so that’s not terrible.

Healing wise I just tried to keep to a rotation; Lifebloom stacks on the LK tank and rejuvs/regrowths on the 2 off tanks. Used wild growth to help with the aoe damage on the melee and Effloresence on the ranged/healers. Popped Tree on transition to phase 2, along with the improved Lifeblood haste boost. Most of the wipes were caused by the Shockwave done by the larger adds, which took out up to 10 people. The 30 min battle res is still making things awkward, particularly with over zealous dps pulling LK threat!

I know a problem I definitely have is nerves. With playing my mage I felt no fear, the healers would take care of me (to a degree) and all I had to do was move and shoot magic at the boss until loot happened. On my druid, I’m feeling the pressure. I keep healing myself for some reason, partly so I can pop the Efflorescence on the ranged. I’m not even sure if that’s a good idea.

In part, it might be because the other healers are a) experienced and awesome and b) all officers in the guild. I’ve had no complaints from the healing team so far so I’m hoping I’m doing ok. I should probably do more practice in heroics and normal 5 mans but I’m still too worried I won’t be able to keep up.

Next raid day is Wednesday; so it’s either a reset or more tries on LK, depending on numbers.

Alty Things; An Alt No More!

So patch 4.0 has finally hit, bringing chaos to our structured WoW again. I think I’m not alone in saying that I had settled into a comfortable rut, with 7 chars levelled to 80, maxed (give or take 10 points) professions and the confidence that I could log any of those chars and make a decent go of it, no matter how bad their gear or how long it had been since I played them. On the one hand it’s a scary, dark place where I don’t know wtf I’m doing again, but on the other, it’s a chance to rediscover my alts and enjoy a new point of view.

My patch day wasn’t as horrendous as it could have been. Downloaded the 5 gb before Wednesday and had the whole thing running with addons by about 2pm. Spent the time I had to spare talenting my druid and talking about changes with my guildies. Since I’d been on the beta these last few months, the stats and new character/profession/social layouts weren’t as hard to get used to (although I still can’t find the button for the friends panel or how I can see that my guildies are afk)

Naora is now my main full time rather than trying to cram in as much stuff on her as possible whilst still playing mage. This makes me feel incredibly relieved but also kind of sad. I’d felt hard pushed to enjoy my mage for so long, resenting playing her in raids and accumulating justice points (via badges) that I was unlikely to spend. I am very fond of my fellow mages, although they still love the class and were a bit confused as to why I was changing chars.

I’ve got so much to blog about really, considering I went almost a month with no posts due to moving, and then internet problems. The net problems are thankfully fixed. It turned out to be a problem with the connection between my house line and the exchange, with the fault in the exchange itself. In the interim, I started playing Neverwinter Nights 2 (drow bard, then drow cleric) and went back to the Sims 3 for a while. Since I’m short on time (as always!) here are some lists, about both patch and non patch things:

Stuff I did Pre patch that I never got to blog about:

  • Rolled a nelf rogue, Iseut and got her to level 31. Enjoying it more than I thought and even did some PvP in WSG, which is my most hated of all bgs. Since the patch I have no idea about talents and things so I’m just guessing and seeing how it works out for me.

Iseut outside the Exodar during Brewfest

  • Playing horde side again on my second account. Managed to misplace my authenticator for that account during the move and only found it last week.
  • Made a chopper with my warlock for Naora.

On my new chopper, with Mr Pinchy's Blessing buff

  • Got Ambassador for Naora by farming faction rep.

  • Got Cenarion Circle exalted by quests/texts/cultist sets. Still need to do Circle though, I’ve found that harder since I’m pretty much playing alone now Celin is bored with WoW again.

This my main viewpoint during AQ20

  • Levelling fishing on Naora (376 now), still no pole from dailies. Fished Mr Pinchy quite early on though and got pet on second try.
  • Got my XT Touring Rocket.

  • Brewmaster on Naora but no mount. A second ram on my mage plus rams on my shaman and warlock. Grand total of 11 direbrew’s remotes and 4 tankards.

  • I also did Operation: Gnomergan 7 times before it was taken out in the patch. It was quite fun the first few times but about the 5th time, it was getting a bit boring.

First day of Operation: Gnomergan was incredibly busy

How I have talented my chars (Main spec/Off spec):

  • Naora (druid) – Resto/Feral tank
  • Aya (mage) – Fire/ Nothing, probably frost for levelling
  • Natsuko (priest) – Shadow/Nothing, probably holy but need to check into this more
  • Kohaku (DK) – Unholy DPS/Blood tank
  • Yuuna (shaman) – Enhancement/Nothing, resto possibly, more likely will try ele
  • Aayame (warlock) – Affliction (Shadow bolt spec plus succubus)/Demo
  • Lucidique (paladin) – Prot/Retri
  • Iseult (Rogue) – Combat (no second spec)
  • Ysolde (Belf hunter) – Not had chance to spec but probably BM
  • Ilikehugs (Belf priest) – Shadow (no second spec)

I had to fill out the other chars with at least one spec as next week is the start of Hallow’s End! Which means much points farming and hoping I get the pet & helm on Naora. Mount would be nice too 😛

Classes that look fun post patch:

  • Warlock (all flavours, calling down your infernals/doomguards etc is just cool)
  • Ele Shaman (Earthquake)
  • Fire mage (9.5k dps on test dummy without knowing wth I was doing)
  • Shadow Priest (played one on beta so I know this is fun)

Things most commonly asked on my trade chat (all written in caps, spelt wrong etc)

  • What is mastery?
  • Where can I get vanishing powder?
  • Where can I reforge?
  • Where is the spirit buff? (priest buff)
  • OMG <insert class> is rubbish
  • OMG <insert class> is OP
  • Is this Cataclysm?
  • Can I fly in Azeroth? (caused by linking Azerothian Flying)
  • Why are there earthquakes?

New Ysera Model Video

A really short video of Ysera’s model in game, with her casting animation. Finally figured how to make slightly better quality videos, so might replace my originals with the new versions!
